So I already discussed how, by drinking more water, I was able to go from 3 sodas a day to 0 sodas a day, in effect cutting out 450 calories per day from my diet. That was a circumstance where switching from drinking soda to drinking water directly lead to less calories consumed in my diet. Well, the benefits of no longer drinking soda and getting plenty of water continue to minimize calories in my diet in indirect ways.
Since drinking water does not add any additional calories to your diet, this means that you don’t have to worry about an energy spike of any kind followed by a crash. Your body considers a crash as a mini famine so, when your body crashes, your metabolism slows down and your energy is rationed.
However, drinking water will promote a higher metabolism as water is necessary to perform most of the body’s functions. A well hydrated body is a hard working body, which means more calories are being burned.
Let’s look at something I started to discuss in a previous article. I’m used to caffeine and I rely on it to wake me in the mornings. I used to drink soda but, when I stopped drinking soda and started drinking more water, I started to drink coffee in the mornings.
Coffee is one heck of an appetite suppressant. I can testify to this first hand as I missed several meals while making the switch. This may sound like a great way to cut calories, but it’s not. Missing meals is not a rational method of cutting calories but you can drink coffee to decrease the size of your meals.
Eating is important, but it’s also a pleasure in which many people feel compelled to overindulge. Drinking coffee will help you push away from the table before too many calories are consumed and any damage has been done. One major exception is the pastry. Coffee and pastries go all too well together, so the two should never be mixed.
In closing, drinking more water will leave less room for drinking sugary drinks loaded with calories. For those of us who do not embrace the mornings, we can drink coffee to start our day, and as an added bonus the coffee will help lessen our desires to eat more calories. Drinking water will get your body working at a much more efficient pace and thereby boosting your metabolism meaning you will burn more calories doing nothing.
