Jessica Mitchels, M.S., E-RYT-500 is assistant professor of health and exercise science at Miramar College and associate kinesiology faculty at MiraCosta College. As an innovative college professor, seasoned yoga educator and certified Reiki practitioner, she has developed and implemented 200- and 500-hour yoga teacher training programs at the college level. She also teaches a number of other health and exercise-science based courses, such as applied kinesiology, health & lifestyle and techniques of exercise leadership.
With a focus on holistic health and mindful living, Jessica is a certified health coach, author, speaker and content developer with an unyielding passion and commitment for empowering people to live their happiest, healthiest, most fulfilling and authentic lives. She serves as senior advisor for health and fitness education for the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and is also a contributing editor for SHAPE.com, developing and delivering practical wellness-focused content geared toward both health and fitness professionals and the general public in the form of articles, videos, blog posts, online educational courses and textbooks.
Jessica is also a featured health and fitness expert and guest host on OWNTV’s web-based video series #OWNSHOW. As a respected and internationally recognized wellness expert and go-to media resource, Jessica contributes regularly to numerous publications publications such as The New York Times, CNN, Yoga Journal, The Washington Post and Health magazine discussing topics ranging from healthful nutrition and effective exercise programs to the research-supported benefits of yoga and meditation.
Jessica holds a bachelors degree in physical education teacher education from Coastal Carolina University, where she graduated at the top of her class and was awarded the distinction of physical education student of the year. She also hold’s a masters degree in physical education from Canisius College. A certified personal trainer, group fitness instructor, SUP yoga teacher and licensed physical educator, Jessica has been making an impact in the world of health and fitness for the last 15 years in a number of different capacities. Prior to teaching full-time at Miramar College, she served in several key roles for ACE, including as exercise physiologist, certification director and senior health and fitness editor. Jessica’s past work experience also includes serving as aquatics diretor at Conway Medical Wellness and Fitness Center, a hospital-based wellness center and designing health and physical education curriculum for grades K-12.
